UPDATE: Ok I guess we didn’t fool a lot of people. But a few for sure ;) Happy time.

Oh my god! What started of as a rumor during the Burton US Open two weeks ago is in fact reality. Shaun White has officially announced that he is quitting competition snowboarding!
You have to admit that the Flying Tomato has won it all: he won the Olympics in Turin as well as the TTR title last winter, he got multiple gold medals at the Xgames year after year since 2002 and this year he finished the TTR tour with a back to back win in the US Open slopestyle and halfpipe.

Combine this winning string with the fact that Shaun has been snowboarding professionally since he’s like 10 years old, you can understand that the winner of the 2008 Laureus World Sports Award for the best Action Sportsperson of the Year has decided to move on and look for new challenges!

As you all know Shaun is not only a snowboard hero, he’s also a super talented skateboarder and won gold at the 2007 Xgames vert contest! But skateboarding is not Shaun’s new focus. Shaun is going for a real challenge: surfing!
Yeah that’s right. The kid from Carlsbad, California, is an assidious surfer and has reached quite a good level.
Shaun believes he can make it to the WCT world tour in 3 years, kick Slater’s ass and win the title in 5!

Shaun Palmer is another Shaun who has proved that it is possible to reach the highest level in different sports such as snowboarding, mountain-biking, skiing…Shaun Palmer was also awarded the ‘Alternative Sportsperson of the Year’ in 2000.

So can Shaun make it and become surfing world champion? What do you think?

  1.
And he’ll be surfing with his head all covered up…Imagine this: full suit and booties; gloves and hat in hawaii.

The black shorts are gonna love it.

I appreciate the effort for such a long post though eheheh

  2. That’s news, haha,

maybe he leaves beacause pearce and Mattila is to good, xD

no no, he’s still a great rider, Hope him good luck!!

  3. interesting,
I’ve heard about this some month ago, I mean, about his wish to take surfing more “seriously”.
Of course, this makes sense on the sport point of view, even greatest sportsmen need new challenges to keep on going and motivate themselves in their lives.
3 remarques tht come out of my (a bit too damaged) head :
    - what about his surfing community integration ? This is special, quite farer from marketing than snowboard industry. His “cash redman” image is tatooed on his skin, this might not match with “wild/root” surfing attitude.
    - can we imagine a new technical surfer, with rotations and so on, or more stylish , powerful and engaged surfer ? (I got my idea on this ;-))
    - is surfing (or snowboarding, or skating) is really competition sport ? why didn’t we see Shauwn on any snowboard movie (except white album and first descent, which are appart) ? Why he didn’t embrace other sides of snowboarding ? despite focusing on sport, competition and medals…
this is not a way of life, it’s just a manner of winning money and get proud of himself !
