It was a busy day of competition under blue skies at the 6Star Burton US Open in Stratton, Vermont. Thursday was the first day for the women to compete in the slopestyle as well as halfpipe qualifiers. They were later joined by the men in the halfpipe for the men’s qualifications. Despite the soft snow, the level of riding was high and much is expected to be coming up tomorrow.

Riders from around the globe are currently making the trek to Stratton, Vermont for the men’s last 6Star event of the 2009/2010 Swatch TTR World Tour season.  The 6Star Burton US Open is set to take hold of Stratton Mountain Resort all next week with slopestyle finals scheduled for Friday, March 19th and halfpipe finals set for Saturday, March 20th.

The 28th annual US Open Snowboarding Championships will once again host thousands of fans and many of the world’s top snowboarders for a weekend of slopestyle, rail jam and halfpipe competitions. Taking place at Stratton Mountain Resort from March 15-21, the Open is the first US event since the 2010 Olympics where snowboard medalists Shaun White, Peetu Piiroinen, Scotty Lago, Hannah Teter and Kelly Clark will compete.

One of the most impressive snowboard athletes in the world today, Peetu Piiroinen, reconfirmed his reputation with a first place finish at the coveted 6Star Oakley Arctic Challenge. The thousands of fans at Tryvann Vinterpark in Oslo, Norway witnessed a piece of snowboarding history as 21-year old Peetu Piiroinen took first place in today’s slopestyle competition, and with an additional 1000 TTR ranking points on his account, he took an unassailable lead in the TTR World Rankings.

Today, we saw the semi finals of the 6Star Oakley Arctic Challenge on the Tryvann Vinterpark slopestyle course on the scenic outskirts of Oslo, Norway. Peetu Piiroinen was in form and qualified in the top spot of his heat leaving Seppe Smits in second and Torstein Horgmo (NOR) in third place. The second heat was dominated by the two Norwegian warriors Mikkel Bang and Tore Holvik leaving Eric Willett in third. In the final tomorrow, ten qualified snowboarders including Mark McMorris, Ville Uotila, Roope Tonteri and Sage Kotsenburg will ride it out for the coveted TAC Title and of course a maximum 1000 Swatch TTR Ranking points.

Yesterday, the 6Star Oakley Arctic Challenge (TAC) saw 32 of snowboarding’s best slopestyle riders battling for one of twenty spots in the semi finals that are today. One of Norway’s most famous riders Torstein Horgmo, used his home country advantage and qualified in first. The slopestyle course in Tryvann Vinterpark, Olso, served as a brand new location for this elite Swatch TTR competition.

The Oakley Arctic Challenge is one of the premiere snowboard events in the world and is the signature event of TTR co-founder, Terje Haakonsen. It was historically the crowning event of the TTR World Champion until the 2005/2006 season. This year could be a repetition of the early TTR years, as one rider has taken a hefty lead and with a good result at TAC can secure the TTR World Champion title into his name.

To sum it up…Shaun White flew 7.5 metres above the halfpipe, Kazuhiro showed what means to have a STYLE, his Japan Mctwists will not be forgoten, Scotty exposed his talents, Peetu and iPod were a serious threat to US team as far as medals were concerned, Markku Koski proved that he is still in the game, etc…I think that was the greatest event ever in Halfpipe history or even in Olympic Games History!
